Michael Dale Tingey, affectionately known as Mike, passed away on the weekend of November 4, 2023, at the age 69 in Lakeview, Oregon. He was born on February 11, 1954, in Cedar City, Utah. Mike was a beloved person and had a very caring nature. He sought out ways to give service to others. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and was a great help to his brother during his major home remodel. He shared his mechanical skills wherever he could and assisted many others according to their needs. He was intelligent, unique and loved to acquire new skills such as learning Spanish. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Mike was resilient and resourceful, despite facing illness during his life. He had a remarkable ability to overcome whatever challenges life brought his way. He worked as a firefighter and in various construction endeavors. He possessed a remarkable mechanical know-how and created several innovative devices. Mike was also an avid gardener and helped others by sharing his considerable gardening advice and generously sharing the abundant fruit of all his labors. In fact, two truckloads of his garden products and home goods were given to those in need upon his passing.
Mike found great joy in pursuing his hobbies. In addition to hiking & biking in the great outdoors and tinkering in his workshop, he had a passion for hang gliding and set several records. He was a beloved part of the hang-gliding community in Oregon, where he was considered a true and trusted friend. One such friend, Todd noted that he personally saw Mike as, “one of the best hang glider pilots, if not the best…” Another, Rick, said of him, “You could always count on Mike to be there for you, lending a helping hand, some much needed advice, or just a good friend to have a laugh with. He was a legend in the history of Hang Gliding, staying in the air, when nobody else could, and venturing out, pioneering seemingly impossible routes. Occasionally one of us who was very lucky, would get to share the air with Mike on beautiful flights across the vastness of Oregon. We'd be carried upward and onward by the very currents that make birds sing! Mention his name to any pilot in the Northwest, and get ready for a heartfelt, exciting and often funny story.” His family is so glad that he was part of such a wonderful community!
Mike is survived by his father, Dale Tingey; his siblings Scott Tingey, Diane Toolson, Richard Tingey, Dan Tingey, Boyd Tingey, Shannan Phillips, and many nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his mother, Jeanette Tingey.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Provo, UT. Mike’s presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Memorial contributions can be made in Mike’s memory to the charity of the donor's choice.
