Mary Alice Sandstrom
July 17, 1944 ~ December 25, 2023 (age 79) 79 Years Old
Mary Alice (Benner) Sandstrom passed away peacefully in her sleep December 25, 2023, in the Lake District Hospital, Lakeview, Oregon.
Mary Alice was born on July 17, 1944, to John Eden “Jack” and Elouise Vale Wilson Benner in Alturas, California. After graduating in 1962 from Surprise Valley High School in Cedarville, California, Mary Alice moved to the Bay Area where she started working in the medical field at Marin General.
She married Kenneth August Sandstrom in 1968 and had her daughter Melinda Ann in 1974. In 1976 the family of three returned to her beloved Surprise Valley.
Mary Alice worked in the medical field from 1967 to 2009 retiring in 2009 from the Surprise Valley Health Care District. She had many great friends and had lots of fond memories during those 24 years.
After retirement she especially loved a warm house, reading, haircut lunch dates, dinner and board games with family and friends, lunch with the girls, morning coffee visits, helping friends wrap Christmas presents and was also known as the local dog sitter to many friends and family members.
She was proceeded in death by her parents and brother George Michael Benner. Survived by her daughter Melinda Stephan, son in law Josh Stephan, granddaughter Alice Stephan, brother John Josiah (Wendy Tollett) Benner, Cedarville. Six nieces, three nephew’s, three great nieces, seven great nephews, two great, great nieces and one great, great nephew. Plus, numerous cousins’, shirt tail relatives, and wonderful friends many whom called her Aunt Mary Alice.
A Celebration of Life Potluck will be held at the Community Hall in Eagleville, California Saturday January 13th at 1:00 PM. The family asks in lieu of flowers to please donate to your favorite charity. Please bring your favorite Potluck item and let’s share some stories.
