Dominic Maita Obituary

Dominic Michael “Mike” Maita Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Adel, OR on January 19, 2022.

Mike was born on May 22, 1946, in Stockton, CA to Dominic Michael, Sr., and Clara Elizabeth (Huffman) Maita.  He was raised and worked on his family’s (Maita Bros.) ranch in central California during his adolescent years.  After high school, Mike attended Modesto Junior College and eventually served in the U.S. Army National Guard for seven years as a medic.

Mike married his wife Carol in 1972 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year.  Mike managed and was a cow boss for many ranches and feedlots throughout his life; Consolidated Land & Livestock, The C Punch Ranch in Gerlach, NV, The Vance Ranch in McDermitt, NV and the Nevada Nile Feedlot in Lovelock, NV to name a few.  His passions were family, horses, and leather craftsmanship.  He was an esteemed cowboy, and many admired his horsemanship abilities.  Mike had a soft way about him which aided him when starting many young horses.  He enjoyed bulldogging in his younger years as well as team roping.  He trained finish roping horses and sold them to the public for a time.  He learned to build saddles from Jim Strong in the late seventies and enjoyed creating saddles for his family and others in the cowboy world.

Mike was a kindhearted man who was loved by many.  He enjoyed visiting friends, sharing stories, and helping people, whether it be advice or lending a hand with a horse or life in general.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, and a grandson Jackson Maita.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, his siblings; Loretta Spence, Bill Maita, Estelle Lyman, Rosemary Williams, Gina Briggs, and Nicolas Maita, His Children; Wayne (Tera) Maita, Zack Maita, and Leah Maita, grandchildren; Dominic Maita, Jeana Maita, Jessie Maita, Nicholas Maita, Lorne Maita, Case Maita, and Tilly Maita.
